Recurring donations — monthly gifts and installment plans

Recurring giving turns one-time supporters into sustaining donors. When recurring donations are enabled for your campaign, the checkout offers two options alongside Give once.
What donors can choose
Every recurring plan has a set length — the donor always picks the Number of months (there are no open-ended plans).
- Monthly — the donor sets an amount to give each month and for how many months. The checkout shows the full picture: "$50/month × 12 months — $600 total commitment."
- Installments — the donor sets a total gift and splits it into equal monthly payments. The checkout spells it out: "$1,200 total — split into 12 monthly payments of $100."
You can set a minimum recurring amount for your campaign; it applies to each monthly charge, and the checkout tells donors the minimum if a charge would fall below it.
A few things to know about recurring at checkout:
- Recurring is currently available on campaigns whose payment provider supports it; on other campaigns donors simply see the one-time option.
- Recurring gifts go to a single team (or the general campaign) — multi-team splits apply to one-time gifts only.
How the money is counted
- The first charge happens immediately at signup. A card that never successfully charges never affects your totals.
- Because every plan has a set length, the donor's full commitment is pledged to your campaign up front (it shows in your progress once the first payment succeeds), and each monthly charge collects another slice of it.
- Older open-ended monthly plans (created before set lengths) keep running as before — their pledge grows month by month as each charge succeeds.
- If a plan ends early, your totals are automatically adjusted down to what was actually collected — you never keep credit for money that won't arrive.
When a recurring charge fails
Cards expire and balances run low. When a scheduled charge is declined:
- The plan moves to Past due.
- Pledgix automatically retries the charge on a short schedule (by default: about 2 days after the failed charge, then about 5 days after it).
- If the donor updates their card, the retry runs promptly with the new card.
- If every retry fails, the plan is cancelled automatically and your campaign totals are adjusted to what was actually collected.
Donors with a Pledgix donor account can update their card themselves from their donor portal — the plan keeps its schedule and history, only the card changes.
Managing plans from your dashboard
Your campaign's Recurring Payments panel lists every plan with its donor, amount, card (brand and last 4 digits), and status:
- Active — charging on schedule.
- Past due — a charge failed; retries are in progress. There's a one-click filter to see all past-due plans.
- Paused — temporarily not charging.
- Cancelled — ended by the donor, a manager, or failed payments.
- Completed — a plan that finished all its scheduled payments.
From a plan you can open its full payment history, help a donor update their card, or Cancel the plan (with a confirmation dialog). Cancelling requires donation-editing permission; viewing requires donation-viewing permission.
Tip: Check the Past due filter weekly. A quick personal email to a past-due donor ("your card on file was declined — here's how to update it") recovers far more plans than silent retries alone.
Receipts
Each successful recurring charge is a real donation row in your Donations tab, so receipts, exports, and analytics treat every installment like any other gift.
