Organizing donors with tags

Tags are colored labels you invent for your own campaign — things like "Board members", "Shul list", "Event attendees", or "Ask in person". A person can carry any number of tags, and tags become instant filters across the whole Profile Center.
Creating and managing tags
- Open your campaign, choose Donor Relations in the sidebar, then People.
- Click Tags at the top.
From the tag manager you can create new tags, rename them, change their color, and delete ones you no longer need. Tag names can be up to 60 characters and must be unique within the campaign. Deleting a tag removes it from everyone who carried it — the people themselves are untouched.
Applying tags
There are three ways to tag people, from quickest to broadest:
- One person — open their profile (click anyone in the people rail) and use the Groups section of their profile tab to add or remove tags.
- Many people at once — tick the checkboxes next to several rows, then click Tag in the blue bar that appears. The same picker can also remove a tag from everyone selected.
- A whole import — when uploading a contact sheet, the Tag everyone in this sheet section applies one or more tags to every person in the file. You can even type a brand-new tag name right there.
Filtering by tag
Open the Filter menu and your tags appear as chips in its Groups section, each showing how many people carry it. Click a chip to filter the list to just those people; click it again to clear. Tag names are also picked up by the search box, so typing a tag name finds its people too.
Tags survive everything
Tags are attached to a person's identity (their email or phone), not to a temporary table row. That means they stay put when profiles refresh, when new imports merge into an existing person, and when a contact later becomes a live donor.
Tags and segments work together
A tag is a manual label — someone put it there. A segment is a rule — people flow in and out automatically. The two combine well: tags can be part of a segment's rules. For example, tag your gala invitees "Gala 2026", then save a segment for "Gala 2026 + hasn't given this year" — the list shrinks by itself as invitees donate.
Tip: Tag every import with a source label the moment you upload it ("Spring dinner list", "Old CRM export"). Six months later, when you're wondering where a contact came from, the tag answers instantly — and lets you message or call exactly that group.
Tip: Keep tags few and meaningful. Five tags everyone on your team understands beat thirty that nobody remembers. Rename or merge duplicates from the Tags manager as your system evolves.
