Matching donations — a deep dive into pools, totals, and the public feed

A matching challenge — "every dollar you give is doubled!" — is one of the most powerful motivators in fundraising. On Pledgix, matching runs on match pools: a sponsor commits a fund, and donations draw from it automatically. Here's exactly how the machinery works.

Who has matching

Match pools are available by default on Pledgix Pro and Political plans — the Pledgix team can enable (or disable) the feature for a specific campaign on request. Foundation pages don't use matching. If your plan doesn't include it, the Matching tab simply doesn't appear.

Setting up a pool

When you create a match pool for your campaign, you define:

  • Sponsor name — and optionally a public display name. If the sponsor prefers anonymity, donors see "a generous sponsor."
  • Multiplier — how gifts are amplified. 2× (the default) means the sponsor adds one dollar for every dollar given; 3× means they add two. Multipliers can go up to 10×.
  • Maximum pool amount — the sponsor's total commitment. Matching stops automatically when it's used up.
  • Activation threshold (optional) — the pool stays dormant until your campaign reaches a set amount, then switches on. The donation that crosses the threshold gets matched itself.
  • Active window (optional) — start and end times, perfect for a "matching hour" or a 24-hour challenge.

The math, precisely

For each eligible donation, the matched amount is:

gift × (multiplier − 1), capped at whatever remains in the pool.

So on a 2× pool, a $100 gift draws $100 of match; on a 3× pool it draws $200. If only $60 remains in the pool, a $100 gift draws exactly $60 — pools never overspend the sponsor's commitment.

If you run more than one active pool, donations draw from the oldest active pool first, exhausting it before touching the next.

How matched amounts count

This is the part organizers ask about most:

  • No extra donation record is created. The match is stamped onto the donor's own donation — you'll see the matched amount and the pool it drew from right on the row.
  • Matched totals are tracked separately from donor totals, at both the campaign and team level. Your dashboards can always tell you what donors gave versus what sponsors added — the numbers never blur together.
  • Matching applies to donations as they complete, automatically. There's nothing to trigger by hand.

What donors and visitors see

Matching is designed to be loud on your public page:

  • A matching challenge banner announces the challenge — who's matching, how much has been matched so far, and how much remains — with an impact line like "Your $100 gift → Sponsor adds $100 → $200 total impact."
  • The public donations feed flags matched gifts with the matched amount and the multiplier, so momentum is visible in real time.

Receipts stay honest: a donor's receipt reflects only their own payment. The sponsor's match is campaign money, not part of the donor's tax record.

Refunds and matched gifts

If a matched donation is refunded or charged back, the matched amount is returned to the pool automatically — the sponsor's commitment goes back to work for future donors, and your matched totals adjust down along with the gift itself.

Managing a live pool

From your campaign's match pool settings you can watch each pool's remaining balance, amount consumed, and utilization percentage. Two controls matter:

  • Pause — deactivating a pool stops new matching but keeps everything already matched intact. Reactivate any time.
  • Delete — permanently removes the pool and reverses every match it made, adjusting campaign and team matched totals in one stroke. Use delete only for pools created in error; for a challenge that simply ended, pause it or let its window expire.
Tip: Announce the threshold, not just the match. "The match unlocks at $5,000" gives donors two reasons to give early — reaching the trigger, then doubling everything after it. The activation threshold feature handles the mechanics for you.

Quick answers

Can a gift be matched across two pools? No — each donation draws from one pool (the oldest active one with balance remaining).

Do recurring gifts get matched? Each completed charge is evaluated like any other donation against pools active at that moment.

Does the sponsor pay through Pledgix? The pool is a commitment you arrange with your sponsor; how the sponsor funds it is between you and them.
