Donations in foreign currencies

Fundraising is global. A supporter in London wants to give pounds; your goal is set in dollars. Pledgix lets donors pay in their currency while your campaign total and goal stay in one consistent currency.

Two currencies, one goal

Every campaign has a goal currency — the currency your goal, progress bar, and totals are measured in. Separately, you can choose which accepted currencies donors may pay in (for example USD, GBP, EUR, ILS, CAD, RUB).

At checkout, the donor picks their currency from a dropdown next to the amount. If it differs from your goal currency, the checkout immediately shows the conversion — for example, a £100 gift on a dollar campaign displays "Equals $127.40 towards the goal." The donor always knows both what their card will be charged and what it means for your campaign.

What the donor's card is charged

The donor's card is charged exactly the amount they entered, in the currency they chose. The conversion only determines how much the gift counts toward your goal — it never changes what the donor pays.

Their confirmation screen and receipt reflect the paid amount, and where relevant show the campaign-currency equivalent ("$127.40 in campaign currency").

How the exchange rate is determined

Pledgix converts using a live exchange rate fetched by our servers at the moment of donation — not a rate supplied by the donor's browser. This protects your campaign totals from stale or manipulated rates. The rate used is stored on the donation record permanently, so the conversion never drifts later even as market rates move.

The same server-verified conversion applies to recurring donations: each plan locks in its paid currency, and its contribution to your goal is computed at a verified rate.

What you see in your dashboard

Each donation record keeps both sides of the story:

  • The paid amount and paid currency — what the donor's card was charged.
  • The base amount in your goal currency — what was added to your campaign total.
  • The exchange rate used for the conversion.

The public donations feed and your progress bar always show campaign-currency amounts, so your page reads consistently no matter how donors paid.

Manual entries and imports

Currency conversion isn't just for online gifts:

  • When you add a manual donation in a different currency, Pledgix converts it to your goal currency so it counts correctly.
  • When you import a spreadsheet, any row whose Currency column differs from your campaign currency is converted at the current rate during import.
Tip: Set your goal currency thoughtfully before launch — it's the yardstick every donation is measured against. Accepted payment currencies, by contrast, can be tailored to wherever your donors are.

Rounding

Converted amounts are rounded to the cent. On multi-team split donations, the split preview shows exactly how the gift divides so donors see the same numbers you will.
